Whiteleys Redevelopment

Laing O'Rourke Construction South Ltd

Construction Project Overview

The Whiteleys redevelopment is a project dedicated to revitalising an iconic mixed-use development within the heart of London. The transformation includes retail facilities, residential apartments and townhouses, a hotel, cinema and restaurants. Laing O’Rourke has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project in 2023. Throughout the project the team demonstrated an impressive commitment to the scheme’s standards, positively impacting key environmental, workforce, and community areas.

Project Highlights

The site demonstrated an ongoing commitment to keeping all stakeholders informed about activity and progress. This included regular newsletters for the local community and traffic marshals to manage vehicle movement. The project actively engaged with educational establishments to promote careers in construction and consistently supported charitable organisations. To minimise disruption, the team diligently monitored noise, dust, vibration, and air quality. Additionally, excellent welfare facilities were provided, including a large canteen and dedicated accessible female facilities.

Innovations and Best Practices

The project team excelled by introducing a CCS-approved innovation and best practice that improved on-site work practices. They implemented a best practice sustainable water treatment filter method, reducing chemical discharge, waste, and facilitating filter reuse. Additionally, the team introduced a Remote Balancing system when constructing the apartments, eliminating the need for ladders, apartment access, and intrusive noise. This innovation has had a game-changing positive effect on the heating and cooling systems.

Respecting the Community

The site maintained extensive communication with those affected by construction. They actively promoted construction careers to educational establishments, reaching over 1,000 young learners. The site ensured minimal disruption and kept interested parties informed about activity, proactively showcasing positive comments within local community groups.

Caring for the Environment

The project maintained a strong commitment to environmental ethics, including regular audits, toolbox talks, and a comprehensive carbon reduction strategy. Guiding KPIs ensured continuous compliance to high environmental standards, with live updates available for noise, dust, vibration, and air quality monitoring – all exceeding scheme requirements.

Valuing the Workforce

The project also prioritised health and safety through behavioural safety training, regular inspections, and informative toolbox talks. Suitable welfare facilities, including lockers and showers, were provided. Female facilities were fully supported and compliant. The project’s commitment to addressing workforce diversity was highly commendable.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding levels of performance.
