Balfour Beatty
In its pursuit to raise standards and strengthen the reputation of the construction industry, the team at Balfour Beatty have gone to extraordinary lengths to make a positive impact at Tynybryn Bridge in Wales. This standout project has been honoured with a Gold and Most Considerate Site Award, achieving outstanding results in supporting the community, protecting the environment, and prioritising its workforce.
Following considerable erosion to the River Ely in the aftermath of Storm Dennis, the project involved the realignment of the river, repair to its embankment, and the replacement of the Tyn-y-bryn footbridge. Commissioned by Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, the scheme included the construction of small weirs to help control the flow of water, and associated works to the footpath and street lighting.
Demonstrating exceptional care and consideration for the community, the team have gone above and beyond to keep the community connected to essential amenities with a free shuttle bus service. Exceptional leadership skills have set extremely high standards in protecting and enhancing the environment. Furthermore, the workforce remains a high priority with impressive standards of support and employee engagement.

The team also went above and beyond excellence by introducing a best practice and innovation to the site to improve overall performance. Firstly, it went out of its way to safeguard community cohesion and foster positive community relations during the project by implementing the best practice free replacement bus service for local residents. The team also introduced an innovation to reduce the project’s carbon footprint while championing community connections to the local environment by installing a brand-new river footbridge.

Erosion to the river embankments had caused significant damage the Tyn-y-bryn footbridge, a vital link for residents to access the GP surgery, pharmacy and local shops. Until the new footbridge was installed, an alternative route was required to reach the opposite side of the river by foot. This was a significant diversion and particularly challenging for those with limited mobility.
Following discussions with the client, the team established the free best practice shuttle bus service for the public, thereby enabling them to continue to access their essential services. Not only has this outstanding initiative been a lifeline for those in need, but it has also fostered excellent community relations.
At its heart, this is an environmental project to help prevent the impact of climate change, and this ethos has been felt strongly throughout the project. Exceptional leadership skills have set extremely high standards in protecting and enhancing the environment. The team have demonstrated an impressive knowledge of the Scheme requirements, working with partners to ensure high standards are maintained.
Striving to reduce its carbon footprint, Balfour Beatty has also challenged traditional bridge construction, reimagining conventional carbon-heavy materials such as concrete and steel with advanced fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP). The use of FRP has significant environmental benefits, as well as being strong and durable, it is also quick to install.

Displaying evidence of outstanding support and excellent engagement for all staff, there is no doubt that the workforce remains a high priority for the team, with multiple examples of positive work in this area throughout 2023.
Well done to the team at Balfour Beatty for making such a positive impact on the industry and in achieving top marks.
