Skanska UK

Construction Project Overview

20 Ropemaker Street is a new 27 storey building providing office space and an area for flexible retail units, within the London Borough of Islington, on the border of the City of London. Skanska has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project. The team has been commended for its dedication to achieving the highest standards when it comes to the scheme’s environmental, community and workforce-focused construction goals.

Project Highlights

The project team demonstrated evidence of progress across all of the code’s key areas, achieving excellent results. This was expected from a major contractor, looking after a large workforce, fully committed to a wellbeing plan and ambitious carbon agenda. The team stood out for their dedication to achieving exceptional environmental, workforce, and community standards, while taking things a step further by adopting a key innovation on-site.

Innovations and Best Practices

The team went above and beyond by implementing a game-changing CCS-approved innovation. The Tower Crane T-lift offered a safer, mechanical method for crane drivers to ascend and descend, replacing the traditional ladder system which could be unsafe in certain conditions like snow or ice. This eliminated the risks associated with potentially slippery ladder steps. All three tower cranes were equipped with T-lifts to improve workforce safety.

Respecting the Community

The project team excelled in developing and implementing a holistic plan to generate positive community impact. Excellent practices were demonstrated, that continued to deliver exceptionally high standards.

Caring for the Environment

The team developed a robust environmental plan that was mindful of the community, striving to maintain and improve the natural environment. This plan was effectively implemented with regular communication and noise reports submitted to the local authority. Regular letter drops, emails, and newsletters were also sent to project stakeholders to keep them fully informed of progress.

Valuing the Workforce

The site team provided outstanding welfare facilities for its staff, including changing rooms/lockers, washing, toilet facilities, drying, rest areas, and canteens. These were hygienically maintained and safeguarded against biological threats.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding performance levels.
