Olympia Redevelopment

Laing O'Rourke

Construction Project Overview

The Olympia redevelopment scheme is a major revitalisation of the West Kensington Olympia Exhibition Centre. Key additions include a cinema, theatre, music venue, retail spaces, restaurants, two hotels and 550,000sqft of office space and will add 2.5 acres of public area.  Laing O’ Rourke has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project in 2023. Site teams have prioritised minimising community impacts, protecting the environment and supporting worker wellbeing in accordance with the scheme’s Code of Considerate Practice.

Project Highlights

The team have been dedicated to making a positive impact during construction. Their efforts in promoting inclusion and wellbeing have been noteworthy. Ambitious carbon reduction targets are in place, along with several wellbeing campaigns that prioritise workforce welfare.

Innovations and Best Practices

The project team has gone above and beyond by implementing a CCS-approved innovation to transform and improve how cranes are powered. As Europe’s first-ever users of Ampd Entertainer Batteries, the project was able to replace the diesel generators in its tower cranes. This has resulted in lower CO2 emissions, noise reduction, and the elimination of diesel-related hazards.

Respecting the Community

The team has strived to create positive community relationships. Site operating hours are considerately designed, whilst noise assessments minimise disruption to residents and advance notices issued with any changes. The team engages in numerous initiatives promoting construction careers, from engaging with youth programmes to supporting women in construction initiatives. Their ongoing community events directly address local concerns. Their commitment was evident when the logistics team actively assisted during a car crash involving 22 children.

Caring for the Environment

The project has been committed to reducing its embodied carbon footprint. Measures included switching to cleaner HVO fuels and rolling out a detailed energy action plan to reach a carbon reduction target of 2,050kgCO2e/£100k. Close monitoring and tracking have provided clear evidence of the positive results of these initiatives.

Valuing the Workforce

The company has fostered inclusivity through a new wellbeing initiative. The team also spearheaded various health and wellbeing campaigns, such as a “hearts and minds” campaign, underscoring the connection between physical and mental health.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding performance levels.
