M6 Junction 21a/26 Motorway Upgrade Scheme

Costain Ltd

Construction Project Overview

This project focuses on development work along the M6 motorway, specifically between junctions 21a and 26. Work includes replacing outdated signage and lighting, enhancing drainage, and constructing a new central concrete safety barrier. Additionally, lane 4 is being resurfaced with a noise-reducing system, and the verge areas are receiving improvements. Costain Ltd has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project in 2023. The site team’s exceptional focus on standards and commitment to the project’s goals has earned them well-deserved recognition.

Project Highlights

The site’s presentation has been professional and well-maintained, featuring exceptionally presented and maintained accommodations, parking with accessibility considerations, a full-time nurse on-site, and outstanding rest facilities. There was a noticeable enthusiasm among the site team and a strong overall commitment to the project’s aims and support for the Scheme’s goals throughout 2023.

Innovations & Best Practices

The project team also enhanced performance by implementing a CCS-approved innovation and good practice. They used the Safety At Plant People Interface, an innovative technology that alerts operators when humans enter exclusion zones. This reduces potential injuries, eliminates false alarms, and gathers data for analysis. Additionally, the team employed Idle Monitoring to reduce emissions, tracking high-idling machines to drive efficiency improvements.

Respecting the Community

The site has maintained excellent engagement with the community during 2023, demonstrating numerous good practices. Initiatives included a Ukrainian appeal, support for the British Legion, and proactive information distribution to local stakeholders. The scheme website featured the ECHO tool for issue logging, with complaints handled through an escalation process that included an external evaluator. Storage areas were sealed and seeded, dust suppression was used, and site induction emphasised cleanliness. CCTV placement avoided intrusion on residential properties, and speed camera lighting was shrouded to minimise disturbance. The site worked with residents regarding tree removal to ensure adequate sunlight in gardens. The team’s active outreach to a local primary school for STEM activities and support for their apiary project was particularly commendable.

Caring for the Environment

The site demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental responsibility. Key practices included mapping environmental risk areas for awareness, using renewable energy in the main office to power on-site electric/hybrid vehicle chargers, and working with a supplier utilising an innovative mix for the white road markings to reduce carbon footprint. Best practices were shared through forums and wider company communications.

Valuing the Workforce

The site’s approach to workforce wellbeing featured many commendable practices. This included highlighting grievance/whistle-blowing procedures, workforce eLearning, a cultural behaviour management programme with an associated implementation plan, and a bi-weekly good practice award scheme. The site offered high-quality shower facilities within the main compound.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding performance levels.
