Lewisham Gateway Phase 2

Balfour Beatty

Construction Project Overview

Lewisham Gateway is a new development to support the regeneration of Lewisham Town Centre, South East London. The project includes the construction of residential buildings, retail, food and beverage facilities, a gym, cinema, offices, and public space. Balfour Beatty has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the outstanding standards upheld during the project in 2023. The project team has shown exceptional commitment to high construction standards that align with the scheme’s goals.

Project Highlights

The site has been exemplary across all aspects of the Code of Considerate Practice. The team have carried out exceptional work to support the local community, which was reflected in impressive and ever-increasing social value figures. Net zero targets were in place, and a group-wide biodiversity plan was implemented to support the environment, with noteworthy success in carbon reduction and green commuting initiatives. Site welfare facilities for staff were exceptional and the project team went above and beyond to introduce several new innovations

Innovations and Best Practices

The project team stood out for their inclusion of several CCS-approved best practices to improve performance on-site. Training was carried out with local residents and the wider local community. This represented a novel approach to construction skills development, reaching out to the community to educate and inform them about construction site conditions. The project also introduced nut and bolt tethering, a technique to prevent fasteners from falling and ensuring that the nuts and bolts used on-site were safely and efficiently secured, thereby protecting the entire team.

Respecting the Community

The team understood the importance of community engagement. They tracked social and economic values, with projects currently valued at over £110m. Educational initiatives included student site tours and a work experience programme for year 10 students. Regular newsletters kept stakeholders informed about progress and achievements.

Caring for the Environment

Environmental goals were a key focus for the team throughout 2023. They made impressive carbon reductions, exceeding targets and saving 100k community miles. Efforts to reduce single-use plastics and introduce recycled PPE helped achieve exceptional waste recycling targets, further demonstrating their environmental commitment.

Valuing the Workforce

The site also maintained the highest worker welfare standards. Robust safety training initiatives were delivered, and diversity and inclusion champions advocated equality and diversity. Access to district nurse facilities and dedicated quiet rooms further supported staff wellbeing.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding performance levels.
