When constructing the Forge Island Canal Barrier, a large flood defence in a very tight, confined urban area, principal contractor Jackson Civil Engineering was committed to leading by example to reduce its environmental impact. Working with the client, the principal designer Pell Frischmann, and stakeholders including the Canals and River Trust, Jacksons conducted a comprehensive environmental and bio-diversity assessment highlighting potential hazards and solutions. As a result 400 tonnes of mass concrete was replaced with earth friendly concrete to offset its carbon footprint; fish protection plans were drawn up to restrict loss of aquatic wildlife; and a landscaping scheme was produced creating artificial habitats to attract bio-diverse wildlife. Making every effort to reduce the environmental impact of this local infrastructure project.
