HS2 Euston Approaches

Skanska Costain Strabag (SCSJV)

Construction Project Overview

HS2 is a state-of-the-art, high-speed railway critical for the UK’s low-carbon transport future. It will provide much-needed rail capacity across the country, and is integral to rail projects in the North and Midlands. Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture (SCS JV) are working together to deliver HS2 along the final 26.4km of HS2’s journey to its southern terminus in Euston. The JV will complete challenging works taking the railway from Northolt to Euston via Old Oak Common, building a variety of structures requiring expert precision and care. The SCS Railways team has been awarded a Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project in 2023.

Project Highlights

The team have been commended for their outstanding commitment to the Code of Considerate Practice. The project engaged with local communities and has been dedicated to carrying out environmental works to leave a positive lasting legacy on surrounding environments. The team also took a serious approach to workforce health and wellbeing, which was evident through a range of positive initiatives.

Innovations and Best Practices

The project team have also gone above and beyond by introducing 4 CCS-approved best-practice initiatives. The team introduced a world-first hydrogen-fuelled piling rig to dramatically reduce carbon emissions, while eliminating worker harm through design with the use of INSTABOOM telematic overhead height barriers to avoid overhead strikes for on-site vehicles. The team also introduced the UK’s only mains-electricity powered piling rig on-site to significantly improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, advanced MudCam technology was deployed as a best practice to monitor reports of road dirt and help to minimise this on-site problem.

Respecting the Community

The size and scale of the required community engagement for a project of this size was immense. Set against community feedback, the project team’s response was well documented, fully resourced and planned, and included a full social value measurement plan.

Caring for the Environment

The project made its environmental commitments a priority through comprehensive awareness training and wide consultation within the community. Environmental plans and procedures were set and supported by extensive feedback and consultation.

Valuing the Workforce

The team have taken a professional approach to health and wellbeing. State-of-the-art facilities were provided for the site’s workforce, taking into account the needs of all faiths, creeds, and nationalities. The site’s reaction to post-COVID preparation and management has been exceptional, especially with regard to the ongoing mandatory hand sanitisation at key site entrance points.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding performance levels.
