Elephant & Castle Town Centre Redevelopment

Multiplex Construction Europe Ltd

Construction Project Overview

This £1.5 billion project will transform a major South London shopping hub into a modern complex in Elephant and Castle. Led by Multiplex Construction (MPX), phase two targets completion in early 2026 and encompasses retail, restaurant, leisure, and workspace elements. Multiplex Construction has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project in 2023. The site team’s commitment to the project’s goals and upholding high standards have been outstanding throughout 2023.

Project Highlights

The project’s success in managing a complex construction site within a densely populated residential area demonstrated exemplary project management. MPX’s thorough communications strategy, developed with the client, enabled effective dialogue. The team actively prioritised local resources and maintained continuous communication with stakeholders. Leadership emphasised sustainability and health and safety standards. The contractor’s carbon reduction approach emphasised supply chain upskilling in this vital area.

Innovations & Best Practices

The site team led the industry with the ECTC Air Quality Footprinting Project, an innovative initiative designed to minimise pollution. This first-of-its-kind project precisely measured pollutants directly generated by the construction, tracking fuel use, transportation, waste, travel, and power. This detailed information allowed the team to proactively adjust practices and achieve environmental goals.

Respecting the Community

The project demonstrated a high level of proactive communication with local residents. This emphasis was sustained through a robust social value and community engagement plan, which already yielded positive results. Due to the dense, high-rise residential surroundings, the contractor collaborated with the client to implement extensive and effective communication strategies, including electronic methods. The site’s external appearance presented a highly professional image for the industry, with well-managed vehicle movements. The contractor consistently prioritised local recruitment for both supply chain and operatives.

Caring for the Environment

The project operated under robust environmental strategies, guided by responsible sourcing and environmental management accreditations, and company policies. This commitment was demonstrated through the inclusion of a dedicated sustainability manager. The effective use of off-site construction methods and the supply chain’s involvement in sustainability decisions further reinforced the project’s environmental focus.

Valuing the Workforce

The project provided extensive accommodations and facilities for the workforce, including a full range of wellbeing support services, reflecting Multiplex’s commitment to its people. Effective support mechanisms encompassed linguistic support, training, helpline access, and wellbeing advice. Welfare facilities were continuously improved to further support the workforce. Additionally, the Multiplex team focused heavily on training for both internal teams and external stakeholders.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding performance levels.
