Carmoney to Strabane Strategic Trunk Main Phase 1A

Construction Project Overview

This project involves the supply and installation of a new Strategic Trunk Main (STM) water supply for Northern Ireland Water Ltd. The 9.5 km pipeline stretches between two reservoirs, primarily crossing rural fields. The main site compound is located in Drumahoe, Co Derry. Murphy & Dawson WAM Joint Venture has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project in 2023. The project team has been commended for its commitment to developing high standards of work and adhering to the Scheme’s environmental, workforce and community-focused requirements throughout its 2023 work.

Project Highlights

The site demonstrated exceptional management standards, benefiting from the company’s accredited systems and a progressive approach. Both the main compound and operational areas were maintained professionally. The site prioritised meeting social obligations through its engagement with schools and charities. Environmental management aligned with official standards and there was a commitment to achieving CEEQUAL accreditation. The company’s dedication to carbon reduction was reflected in its recent environmental accreditations. The workforce benefited from a progressive management approach, excellent facilities, and safety protocols that were aligned with accredited standards. Overall, the site reflected a proactive and commendable approach, exceeding expectations across all Scheme sections.

Innovations & Best Practices

The project team has also excelled by introducing a CCS-approved innovation to improve workflows. The team purchased compact, affordable CellAED defibrillator units for fitting into work vehicles, and were inspired to include these on the construction site thanks to the 2022 NEC Health and Safety Event which promoted the adoption of this potentially life-saving technology.>

Respecting the Community

The site has demonstrated an excellent presentation of both the main compound and all operational areas. Community arrangements have been aligned with client requirements, and social clause initiatives benefited the wider community through partnerships with schools and charities.

Caring for the Environment

The site team also meticulously followed ecological requirements, outlined by stakeholders like the NI Environmental Agency. Environmental efforts went above and beyond with adherence to the parent company’s environmental management procedures, CEEQUAL registration, and a recent environmental accreditation. The site collaborated with landowners and schools for further environmental improvements.

Valuing the Workforce

Additionally, the company has provided first-class facilities for the workforce as part of its progressive management approach. Employees were offered yearly health assessments and well-being events. Safety was prioritised through occupational health and safety accreditation. To support employees, shower and laundry facilities were available in a company-rented house near the main compound. This demonstrated an exceptional commitment to all aspects of workforce well-being.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding levels of performance.
