Galliford Try Building - London & South East Commercial

Construction Project Overview

This project, located on London’s Charing Cross Road (WC2), focuses on revitalising a building through strip out, partial facade demolition down to basement level, and the construction of new foundations, access ways, and lift shafts. Galliford Try has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project in 2023. The project team has earned praise for its exceptional execution of site work over 2023, with exceptional commitment to the community, the workforce and the environment.

Project Highlights

The site exemplified best practices in considerate construction, consistently adhering to the Code of Considerate Practice. The team maintained a positive relationship with the local community while simultaneously meeting ambitious sustainability and social value goals. The project aligned with the company’s carbon reduction initiatives, promoting these efforts to the workforce and public. Additionally, the team provided outstanding resources and wellbeing programmes for their workforce and successfully championed key topics such as modern slavery, equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Innovations & Best Practices

In addition to achieving high standards in line with the Scheme’s aims, the project team also introduced 3 best practice initiatives to enhance results. It installed the Quensus Water Management System to minimise water waste during the construction process and implemented a Safety/Community Display to reinforce safety messages and highlight industry partnerships. The team also championed mental health best practice with its Mental Health Hi-Vis Campaign to honour Mental Health Awareness Week 2023 by promoting open conversations and suicide awareness.

Respecting the Community

The site’s dedication to implementing positive community-focused initiatives and good practices has been outstanding, with numerous productive initiatives taking place. It was particularly encouraging to note the site’s social value plan, which contained a variety of activities designed to promote construction to students and provide positive support for local community stakeholders.

Caring for the Environment

The site’s care for the environment was also at an excellent standard. Targets continued to be rigidly set for environmental issues and performance was monitored against them to ensure continual environmental improvement. Performance was then shared with the workforce and key stakeholders to showcase success and progress. Measures were also designed to minimise the site’s carbon footprint, and plans had been laid to reduce emissions wherever possible.

Valuing the Workforce

Workforce arrangements at the site were maintained to a very high standard. Thorough company environmental management and occupational health and safety management procedures were in place. There was a robust safety inspection regime carried out at the project and a thorough briefing system to help with compliance. Equality and diversity were comprehensively addressed and the open-door policy that was in place was very evident, helping to achieve a workplace environment of openness and respect.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding performance levels.
